Putin ordering attack on Kyiv amid G7 summit is calculated message, says Ukraine’s MFA
Russian leader Vladimir Putin deliberately ordered a strike on Kyiv during the G7 summit in an attempt to portray global leaders as weak. Russia is showing contempt for international peace efforts
Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs made this statement.
Ukraine urges the international community to strongly condemn Russia’s large-scale attack on the night of June 17, during which Russia launched 440 drones and 32 missiles. The ministry noted that the attack caused civilian deaths and injuries and damaged kindergartens, homes, schools, and industrial buildings.
Ukraine sees this strike as a clear message from Putin during the G7 summit, showing disrespect for peace efforts, especially those led by the United States.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stresses that Ukraine is ready for peace — it agreed to a ceasefire, held talks, and suggested real actions. Meanwhile, Russia has not made any positive moves and only increases its aggression.
In this context, Ukraine called on its partners to:
- Strengthen sanctions against Russia, especially in the energy and banking sectors.
- Lower the price cap on Russian oil to $30 per barrel.
- Accelerate the delivery of air defense systems (Patriot, NASAMS, IRIS-T) and ammunition.
- Confiscate frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine's defense and reconstruction.
- Isolate the Russian military-industrial complex from global markets and suppliers.
“We continue to insist on the policy of peace through strength. Peace through strength means maximum economic pressure on the aggressor, complete cessation of financing its war crimes, disconnection from global financial systems and total isolation of the terrorist regime. Peace through strength implies blocking all channels through which the Kremlin receives resources to continue its war of aggression against Ukraine, including a complete cessation of cooperation with the Russian defense industry and its international suppliers. Peace through strength is the only way to bring a just end to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, as Russia understands only the language of strength,” the MFA statement reads.
- On the night of June 17,Ukrainian air defense forces neutralized 428 out of 472 air targets.
