Putin still wants to seize most of Ukraine - US intelligence

US intelligence director Avril Haines has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not given up his intention to seize most of Ukraine, but Russia's army is so demoralized by the fighting that it will only be able to make small gains in the near future

Reuters reported the story.

"We think he has effectively the same political goals that we had previously, which is to say that he wants to take most of Ukraine," Haines said.

According to her, Russian forces have been so exhausted for more than four months of fighting that they are unlikely to be able to achieve Putin's goal in the near future. Avril Haines said that US intelligence sees three possible scenarios for the further development of the war in Ukraine. The most probable scenario is a conflict in which Russian troops will achieve only minor conquests.

The other two scenarios envisage Russia's 'major breakthrough' and the successful stabilization of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' frontline with possible small successes near the temporarily occupied Kherson and in other areas in southern Ukraine.

"During this period, we anticipate that they're going to be more reliant on asymmetric tools that they have, such as cyber attacks, efforts to control energy, even nuclear weapons in order to try to manage and project power and influence globally. In the interim, Russian troops are unlikely to be able to conduct multiple simultaneous operations," Haines added.
