Putin prepares for even bigger war – Ukrainian ombudsman Lubinets
Ukrainian Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said that the actions of Russian leader Vladimir Putin indicate that he is not looking for a way out of the war in Ukraine, but is preparing for an even bigger one
He wrote about this on Facebook.
"Sanctions against Russia and the provision of weapons to Ukraine should be the international community's response to Russia's deliberate disregard for international humanitarian law," Lubinets said.
He recalled that Putin recently submitted a bill to the State Duma that would abolish the need to notify international organisations, such as the UN or the Council of Europe, of the introduction or termination of a martial law/emergency in Russia.
According to the Ukrainian ombudsman, this is another violation of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms by the aggressor country. In addition, the amendments to the law will allow the Russian leadership to repress Russians without regard to international humanitarian law.
"What does this mean? The Russian president is not looking for a way out of the war in Ukraine, but is preparing for an even bigger one. Moreover, he does not rule out armed clashes with NATO countries," said the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights.
Lubinets called on the international community to seriously prepare for the threat posed by Russia, and on Western partners to impose additional sanctions against Russia and provide additional weapons to Ukraine to stop Russia's military expansion.
"Russia's aggression has demonstrated that the criminal regime of the Kremlin's top leadership will not stop in Ukraine, but may start an even bloodier war in Europe. The Russian Federation is a threat to the security of the entire democratic world!" the Ukrainian ombudsman added.
On August 9, Russian leader Vladimir Putin introduced a bill to the State Duma that would abolish the need to notify the Secretary General of the Council of Europe of the introduction or termination of a martial law or state of emergency in Russia.
