Putin and Russia are main causes of global crisis - Ukraine's former prime minister
Arseniy Yatseniuk, Chairman of the Ukrainian Business Foundation, Prime Minister of Ukraine in 2014 to 2016, has taken part in the international online conference Sustainability 2100
Among the nearly 10,000 participants from 30 countries, there were representatives of KPMG, Enel, Morgan Stanley, Tata, company presidents, corporate executives, founders of organizations, economists, energy and sustainable development experts, analysts, and researchers.
Yatseniuk emphasized that the world is currently facing a number of major challenges, the first of which is the war unleashed by Putin. "We are also struggling with the challenges of inflation, high interest rates, isolationism, we are struggling with the energy crisis, population aging, climate change," he said.
But the main reason for such a serious crisis in the world today is Putin and Russia, Yatseniuk emphasized.
Arseniy Yatseniuk addressed the conference participants with a list of steps that should not be taken and those that should be taken to overcome these challenges.
First of all, he appealed to business representatives not to buy Russian gas. "The whole of Europe was extremely dependent on Russian gas, because Russia used everything as a weapon, including energy. The entire EU was held hostage by Russia's extremely aggressive policy. So number one, don't buy Russian gas," he urged.
He also urged not to buy Russian oil, recalling that the G7 sanctions imposed a price cap on those doing business, for example, in India or China: "I advise you to buy Russian Urals for no more than USD 30 per barrel. This is beneficial for you and is also the best way to reduce the Russian military budget," Yatseniuk stressed.
"I appeal to you not to avoid or circumvent the sanctions imposed by the free world against Russia. Do not sell any goods that help Russia wage war against the free world," he emphasized.
"Do not invest in Russia. Do your best to leave Russia as soon as possible if you have assets in Russia. It is better to calculate the losses than to finance the murders of innocent people in the center of Europe," continued Yatseniuk.
Ukraine’s ex-PM underlined the importance of investing in green energy and new types of energy resources. He recalled that he opposed the Nord Stream 2 and as the first Prime Minister of Ukraine in wartime "explained to a number of states, including Germany, that this was the wrong way to lead their countries."
"In the end, it was proven true.. In my opinion, the future belongs to renewable and nuclear energy. By nuclear energy, I mean well-secured nuclear power plants. The US has already shown incredible progress in developing new nuclear reactors for the world. And we are convinced that this is the future."
Yatseniuk also stressed that democracy is the only way for a competitive and strong economy, for investment in innovation. "Democracy is the best safeguard against tyranny and corruption. It is the basis of a sustainable future for the world," he said.
The struggle for democracy, he noted, is also linked to the fight against populism.
"You need resilience and courage. Only those who know what needs to be achieved and believe in it, only those who have resilience and courage, will achieve the best results," commented Arseniy Yatseniuk.
