Prisoner exchange: 107 Ukrainians return from Russian captivity
On November 3, Ukraine returned 107 servicemen from Russian captivity. In total, 1,138 fighters have been released since February 24
Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, reported the information on Telegram.
Among the released fighters there are:
33 soldiers of the National Guard of Ukraine,
21 fighters of the Naval Forces,
20 soldiers of the Armed Forces,
18 State border servicemen,
13 Territorial Defense Forces fighters,
one representative each of the National Police and the State Special Transport Service.
83 of the released soldiers were seriously injured in the hostilities. "Some of the freed Ukrainian defenders are in a critical condition. But all of them will receive the necessary help," the commissioner stated.
Andriy Yusov, representative of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine, reported the details of the exchange from the scene live on United News national telethon.
"This exchange was particularly difficult since it involved injured people. These people should have not been exchanged, but simply released home. Even in such cases, the aggressor state does not adhere neither to the framework of international law nor do they show any morality. However, the men have now been returned," Yusov said.
The directorate representative emphasized that the majority of the exchanged soldiers are injured. Some of the fighters are in a very severe condition, they are already being sent to intensive care units and hospitals. "There are people with chronic diseases. Some of them started to suffer from severe health issues already while in captivity. Of course, all of them are provided with the necessary help, and a long process of recovery and rehabilitation awaits all of them," the representative assured.
The released Ukrainian defenders have already had the opportunity to contact their relatives.
Yusov also stressed that the defenders of Mariupol were returned home: "More than 70 defenders of Azovstal are home; every one of them is particularly important for the whole country, including the border guards, the Navy, the Armed Forces, everyone indeed."
Yusov added that the next exchange will take place in the near future.
In total, 1,138 defenders have returned from captivity since the beginning of the Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine.
Andriy Yermak, the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, shared the news on Facebook.
"Today we conducted another exchange of war prisoners. We managed to free 107 soldiers - 6 officers, 101 privates and sergeants," Yermak writes.
Ukraine has managed to return soldiers from the Armed Forces, the Naval Forces, the Territorial Defense, the special transport service, the National Police, as well as border guards and national guardsmen, including Azov regiment fighters.
Among them 74 Ukrainian soldiers who defended Azovstal. Also volunteers who went by helicopter to Mariupol to defend the city.
"We returned home many fighters who were injured in battles. In particular, we managed to exchange seriously injured and bedridden soldiers from Mariupol, from Azovstal, boys suffering from shrapnel and bullet wounds of various parts of the body. There are people who have amputated limbs, with burns so bad they cannot feel part of their face, with infected wounds," Yermak writes.
One of the soldiers was injured as a result of the explosion in the Olenivka Colony. Many of the men were injured back in March.
