Polish president calls on U.S. to deploy nuclear weapons in Poland
Polish President Andrzej Duda calls on the United States to deploy its nuclear weapons on Polish territory to deter possible Russian aggression
The Financial Times reported the information.
Duda stated that it is "obvious" that the U.S. President Donald Trump could relocate American nuclear warheads stationed in Western Europe or the U.S. to Poland. According to him, he recently discussed this proposal with the U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg.
“The borders of Nato moved east in 1999, so 26 years later there should also be a shift of the Nato infrastructure east. For me this is obvious,” Duda said in an interview with the Financial Times. “I think it’s not only that the time has come, but that it would be safer if those weapons were already here,” Duda emphasized.
According to the outlet, the Polish president hopes to revive the nuclear sharing project, which he unsuccessfully presented to the administration of former U.S. President Joe Biden in 2022.
Duda noted that it is up to Trump to decide where to deploy U.S. nuclear weapons, but recalled Russian leader Vladimir Putin's decision to deploy tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus.
“Russia did not even hesitate when they were relocating their nuclear weapons into Belarus,” Duda said. “They didn’t ask anyone’s permission.”
- Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that the country was negotiating with France on possible access to nuclear weapons.
