Polish radio station RMF FM reported the information, citing its own sources.
According to media reports, the Polish prosecutor's office received information that Schröder could have committed a criminal offense and launched an investigation. The investigation is being conducted by the Mazovian Department of the National Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime and Corruption.
"According to the documents obtained during the investigation, the German politician could have used his position in the Russian energy sector to put further pressure on EU countries and Ukraine," RMF FM wrote.
Investigators will also be looking into the former chancellor's role in "preparing Russia's invasion" of Ukraine, as despite Russia's intervention on Ukrainian territory, "Schröder did not leave the Kremlin and went on to hold positions in Russian energy companies."
In August 2022, Gerhard Schröder said that during his visit to Moscow, he met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and talked to him about a ceasefire in Ukraine.
