Our case has become a matter of principle for the West

Do you realize, my dear friends, that we are experiencing the largest and most powerful shift in Ukrainian history, and that we are all, in fact, participants and direct perpetrators of it?

The post-genocidal, deprived in every way throughout the course of several hundred years of history, with the Holodomor, the Holocaust, Stalinism, Hitler's occupation, and Brezhnev's Russification in our anamnesis. We had 22 years of relative independence to form a kind of social backbone and formulate a kind of national idea. Now everyone knows it and we all share it, regardless of personal identity, language or religion. "Get away from Moscow!"

No one repeats the national idea or meditates on it much. It is our air and our daily practice. Everyone understands it without any words, as too much suffering and blood of our best people who have been dying every day in the war with Russia for the past 9 years have been sacrificed.

But we made it through. Even though we are being killed again - what a surprise! - just for being Ukrainian. And 22 years of living in a country where Ukrainians were not killed or harassed for being Ukrainian for the first time was enough for us. For some, a hundred would not have been enough. No, we had little or no support in our own country, but there were enough of us to hold on in 2013 and 2014 and to survive in 2022, infecting the whole country with anti-colonial and national liberation ideas.

And now our cause has become a matter of principle for the West. And it happened so only because it had become a matter of principle for us.
