Orbán's Hungary is a Trojan horse for Russia, China in Europe - Politico
Hungary supports pro-Russian ideas, and in Russia's war against Ukraine, it leans towards the Kremlin
Politico writes about it.
"Hungarians practice their own imperial policy towards the surrounding countries, where there is a Hungarian minority. Orbán must finance his generous social policy by selling European security," one Central European official told Politico.
He described the behavior of the Hungarian government "as a Russian and Chinese Trojan horse."
Hungary, according to the official, will continue to resist some efforts to help Ukraine — but in the same way how "they have acted so far." "They think only about themselves, act only for themselves," he added.
Political scientist and research associate of Re:constitution Edit Zgut-Przybylska believes that accusing Kyiv and the West plays an important role in Orban's election narrative. "This fits perfectly with the Eurosceptic populism of Fidesz, which argues that a corrupt imperialist West threatens stability in Central and Eastern Europe," she told Politico.
Orbán "doesn't care about Ukraine," said András Simoni, former Hungarian ambassador to NATO and the United States.
Hungary's position on the war, in his opinion, "is not just a nuisance, it is a threat." "I don't think NATO or the European Union take it seriously. And I think it's a mistake," Simoni emphasized.
On August 31, Hungary agreed with the Russian Federation on additional gas supplies from September 1.
