Ukrainian MP and member of the Verkhovna Rada’s Defense Committee, Yehor Cherniev, shared his opinions live on Espreso TV.

“Article 5 (of NATO, ed.) is preceded by Article 4, which calls for consultations among Alliance member countries to determine possible actions. Participation can vary. We saw the invocation of Article 5 after September 11 in the United States. Indeed, some countries participated only through support, weapons, and so on, but there were also countries that sent their contingents. So what interests me is this: if there is an equivalent of Article 5, what portion of those countries willing to act would actually send their contingents? Or would no one send troops and only provide weapons or financial aid? If that’s the case, then it’s not Article 5; it’s something else - it’s not about an Article 5 equivalent,” he said.

Yehor Cherniev doubts whether any country would agree to send its military contingent to Ukraine without security guarantees for its citizens stationed in Ukraine.

“So, to be honest, I doubt that, as of today, any country could overcome itself and send such a contingent without… The only scenario in which this could happen is if they have the United States backing them, guaranteeing that if this country is attacked in Ukraine, the United States will intervene on its behalf. That’s the only scenario in which I see that such guarantees could truly be provided and a contingent could realistically be deployed in Ukraine,” the MP added.
