Taiwan follows Ukraine's lead, develops its sea drone analogues to Magura V5, Sea Baby
Taiwan’s CSBC Shipbuilding Corporation has unveiled its military development, the Endeavor Manta, a sea drone designed to counter a potential amphibious assault from mainland China. Inspired by Ukraine’s use of asymmetric warfare tactics, CSBC aims to create a versatile platform for defense
Defense Express reported that the Endeavor Manta is an 8.6-meter-long trimaran, capable of carrying up to 1 ton of payload and reaching speeds of 35 knots (65 km/h).
The drone’s design focuses on stealth, with sharp contours for reduced visibility. It can either be armed or function as a kamikaze drone. Interestingly, it also features a cockpit, suggesting the option for manned operation during testing or for convenience in deployment.
A standout feature is its advanced communication systems. While it includes satellite communication, the drone also utilizes 4G mobile and regular radio frequencies. The satellite system is likely OneWeb’s, as Taiwan has already ordered nationwide OneWeb coverage for late 2024. This decision reflects Taiwan's uncertainty regarding SpaceX’s Starlink expansion, which remains pending.
The drone is particularly suited for operations in Taiwan's coastal waters, where Starlink may not be reliable. Moreover, its use of 4G and radio frequencies ensures operational flexibility in confined areas, especially when targeting ships approaching the island.
CSBC emphasizes the drone’s high navigation autonomy and swarm capabilities. One operator can control up to 50 drones simultaneously, allowing for coordinated attacks, either kamikaze-style or with miniature torpedoes.
