Sanctions against Poroshenko might be politically motivated before elections - MP
Ukrainian MP Oleh Synyutka believes that the sanctions against Petro Poroshenko play into the hands of Russia's Putin
He expressed this opinion during a broadcast on Espreso TV.
"The decision to impose sanctions on Petro Poroshenko is completely illegal, and there is no doubt about it. Firstly, Petro Poroshenko has never held any citizenship other than Ukrainian, nor will he ever. He is certainly not Medvedchuk or Kolomoisky, who have long been found to be collaborating with the aggressor country.
Sanctions can only be imposed if the person is not a citizen of Ukraine. Sanctions can also be imposed on terrorists and extremists. It’s interesting that exactly a year ago, Russian dictator Putin called Poroshenko a terrorist and extremist because he defended and continues to defend the Ukrainian state. Today, the National Security and Defense Council has repeated those accusations that came from the Russian dictator. This is a very unpleasant story," said Synyutka.
The MP believes that there could be several reasons for the sanctions against Petro Poroshenko. He suggested that one of them might be related to the government's preparations for elections.
"There are several probable reasons for the sanctions against Petro Poroshenko. Perhaps we are approaching the elections, and the government wants to push the opposition leader aside. Or maybe the government has some plans related to Ukraine's capitulation, and they know that Porochenko and European Solidarity party will not allow anti-Ukrainian agreements. It’s hard to pinpoint the main motives. It could simply be the hatred that exists towards Petro Poroshenko," he added.
- On February 13, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy enacted the National Security and Defense Council’s decision on sanctions against former President Petro Poroshenko, Ihor Kolomoisky, Kostiantyn Zhevago, Henadiy Boholyubov, and Viktor Medvedchuk.
- President of the European People’s Party Manfred Weber called on Ukrainian authorities to stop persecuting Poroshenko, who has been sanctioned.
