He made this statement in an interview with Fox News after his conversation with Trump at the White House, Politico reports.

"Come on, you cannot have a trade war with China and Europe at the same time. I hope I convinced him," Macron said.

According to him, the U.S. priority should be tariffs on Chinese goods, while a trade conflict with the EU would contradict American interests.

“I hope I did convince him on trade and tariffs," Macron told Trump’s favorite TV station. “I told him: It’s very important for you not to launch new tariffs.”

Donald Trump met with Emmanuel Macron at the White House on February 24. He is also set to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on February 27.

  • On February 11, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports to the United States without any exceptions.
  • On February 13, the U.S. president released a roadmap for reciprocal tariffs, with media reports indicating they target goods from China, Japan, the EU, and South Korea.
  • On February 14, the European Commission stated it would respond immediately and firmly to the U.S. tariff hikes, calling Trump's trade policy unjustified.
