ICC prosecutor Karim Khan temporarily steps down amid scandal
The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, who issued the arrest warrant for the Russian ruler Vladimir Putin, has temporarily left his position amid an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment
This was reported by Reuters.
It is noted that Khan took a leave of absence until the UN investigation is completed.
“In light of escalating media reports, I have made the considered decision to take leave. My decision is driven by deep and unwavering commitment to the credibility of our Office and the Court, and to safeguard the integrity of the process and fairness to all involved” the ICC head wrote to his colleagues, as Reuters reviewed.
Currently, Khan’s duties will be performed by his two deputies. At the same time, the news agency notes that there is no clear procedure for replacing the chief prosecutor of the ICC. This creates additional uncertainty for the Court, which is already facing an existential crisis due to U.S. sanctions in response to arrest warrants against Israeli officials, the report adds.
- In November 2024, it was reported that the ICC had launched an internal investigation against chief prosecutor Karim Khan, who was accused of sexual harassment.
- Later, the International Criminal Court initiated an external investigation against Khan on sexual harassment allegations.
