European Parliament extends tariff-free regime for Ukrainian steel, iron for 3 years
On May 8, the European Parliament extended the so-called "trade visa-free" arrangement—suspending quotas and customs duties—for Ukrainian steel and iron for another three years, considering that the general autonomous trade measures for Ukrainian goods exported to the European Union will expire on June 6, 2025
This was stated in the legislative resolution of the European Parliament, titled "Suspension of certain parts of Regulation (EU) 2015/478 as regards imports of Ukrainian products to the European Union," which was approved on Thursday, May 8, 2025, and is available to European Pravda media.
The European Parliament's resolution will continue the duty-free import of steel and iron from Ukraine to the EU until June 5, 2028.
"Currently, the European Commission is working on a long-term solution to ensure greater economic transparency in trade relations between the EU and Ukraine," the European Parliament's press service said.
"The Ukrainian metallurgy industry is the backbone of Ukraine's economy. It continues to operate despite the fact that many workers have gone to the front, and factories are subjected to brutal attacks by Russia," said the rapporteur of the European Parliament, Swedish MEP Karin Karlsbro (Renew group).
The resolution was voted for by 354 MEPs, 147 voted against, and 53 abstained.
The legislative resolution will come into effect after its approval by the EU Council and official publication.
The European Commission does not plan to continue the regime of autonomous trade measures for Ukraine (the so-called "trade visa-free") which is valid until June 5. However, a smooth transition to a new scheme is planned, where all trade liberalization conditions will be established in a free trade agreement between Ukraine and the EU.
