European Parliament election results: pro-Ukrainian centrist majority retained
Espreso correspondent Tetyana Vysotska reports that according to preliminary vote counts, pro-Ukrainian centrist forces have won a majority in the European Parliament elections
She shared the recent updates live on Espreso TV.
"The vote count in the European Parliament elections is still ongoing. However, the results have already been made public. The good news for Ukraine is that the pro-Ukrainian centrist majority in the European Parliament has been preserved. That is, the forces that previously supported Ukraine retain a majority. For example, the European People's Party will receive 185 seats in the European Parliament. Previously, they had 177 seats. The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats will receive 137 votes, and the group Renewal of Europe will receive 79 seats," Vysotska said.
The correspondent reported that Ursula von der Leyen may hold on to the post of European Commission President.
"In total, these three groups give 401 votes. We know that the majority in the European Parliament is 361 votes. Thus, we can state that the current President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has a high chance of holding on to her position. Because these three political groups that support her can easily support her candidacy," she added.
- On Monday, June 10, the European Parliament announced the preliminary results of the elections held on June 9 in 20 European countries.
