The EU is concerned about developments around NABU and SAPO anti-corruption agencies but sees no reason yet to suspend financial support to Ukraine

This was stated by European Commission spokesperson Guillaume Mercier in response to a question from a correspondent of European Pravda.

“At the moment, this issue is not being discussed,” Mercier told media.

He explained that, when it comes to the financial support the EU provides to Ukraine, there are a number of decision-making systems and control mechanisms that could theoretically be applied.

“So, safeguard mechanisms do exist. But we’ll see whether we ever get to that point,” said the European Commission spokesperson.

At the same time, he noted that the European Union is concerned about the situation involving NABU and SAPO.

  • On July 21, the ambassadors of the G7 countries expressed concern over investigative actions by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) regarding the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU).
  • The Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) has passed draft law No. 12414 in its second reading. If enacted, the law would place the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) under the authority of the Prosecutor General, undermining their current status as independent anti-corruption bodies.
