China is neither friend nor foe to Ukraine — foreign policy expert
Nataliia Plaksiienko-Butyrska, expert on East Asian affairs and Master of Foreign Policy, says that China is not an enemy to Ukraine, but it is not a friend either
She expressed this opinion on Espreso TV.
"China is not our enemy, and we have tried in every possible way to build relations with China during the three years of war, taking into account its friendship with Russia, so as not to make an enemy out of China. At least, I have observed such a policy from our authorities, who gave China a chance, in balancing its close relations with Russia, to still find opportunities to play some role in this war. But China is not our friend either. We must honestly admit that, in the Chinese view of the current confrontation, Ukraine is part of the United States' game. That is, China very easily and gladly picked up the Russian narrative," she said.
Nataliia Plaksiienko-Butyrska noted that China agrees with the idea that Ukraine is supposedly a pawn in the hands of the United States, which is trying to fight Russia through Ukrainians, thereby weakening Russia.
"That is, through this prism of its own vision, and even more so through the prism of its own confrontation with the United States, China looks at this entire conflict. And that is why, no matter how much we tried to bring China to our side, no matter how much we tried to have it stand with Ukraine and support our position, we have not succeeded, given its own interests," the international affairs expert added.
