He said this at the German-Ukrainian Municipal Partnership Conference in Leipzig, Tagesschau reports.
"Ukraine needs our support even more now, when there is also a war in the Middle East, and the war in Ukraine no longer receives the attention it so desperately needs. Putin is counting on the world to forget about Ukraine," Steinmeier said.
According to him, Germany has not and will not do the Russian leader such a favor.
"We will not accept Russia's illegal and aggressive war," the German president stressed.
He added that it is not only Ukraine that is under threat from the Russian regime, its neighboring countries are also in danger.
- The day before, it was reported that the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) is preparing a batch of aid to Ukraine, which mainly includes construction equipment and materials, including transporters, mini-excavators, ladders, wheelbarrows, concrete mixers and tools.
- German Ambassador to Ukraine Martin Jaeger also said that Germany would send two more IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine by the end of this year, in addition to the three it had previously provided.
- In 2024, Germany will double its military assistance to Ukraine, bringing the total amount of aid to €8 billion.
