The Kremlin reveals who will join Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the Alaska summit with the U.S. President Donald Trump
The Russian propaganda agency TASS shared the information, citing a statement from Yuri Ushakov, the Kremlin's foreign policy aide and former Russian ambassador to the U.S.
The talks between Trump and Putin are reportedly set to take place at the U.S. Air Force base Elmendorf-Richardson. The agenda for the meeting has reportedly been agreed upon. The session will begin at 10:30 p.m. Kyiv time with a private conversation attended only by interpreters.
The U.S. and Russian delegations will meet in a 5-on-5 format. The Russian delegation will include:
- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov;
- Assistant to the Kremlin Chief of Staff for Foreign Affairs, former Russian Ambassador to the United States Yuri Ushakov;
- Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov;
- Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov;
- Head of the Direct Investment Fund Kirill Dmitriev.
According to Ushakov, the composition of the American delegation for the Putin–Trump talks has also been finalized.
“The central theme of the Putin–Trump summit will be the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis, but other topics will also be addressed,” he said, adding that bilateral economic cooperation and global security issues will be discussed as well.
After the meeting, the U.S. president and the Kremlin leader will hold a joint press conference. The Russian delegation will depart Alaska immediately following the summit.
“The Kremlin considers it symbolic that the meeting between Putin and Trump will take place not far from the burial site of Soviet pilots in Alaska,” Ushakov noted.
Trump–Putin meeting: background
On August 8, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine would involve some territorial exchanges.
Later, the American president announced that he would meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, August 15.
Before the Trump–Putin meeting, senior officials from the U.S., Ukraine, and European countries are expected to hold talks to coordinate joint positions.
The media also reported that Volodymyr Zelenskyy might join the U.S. leader’s meeting with the Russian leader. However, at a briefing on August 11, Trump noted that he would meet with Putin first, and afterward, there might be a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy, or all three together.
European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas said that Putin wants to imitate negotiations and delay sanctions at the meeting with Trump.
On August 12, Zelenskyy stated that the upcoming meeting between U.S. leader Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska could only be important for bilateral relations between the two countries — they cannot make decisions regarding Ukraine.
At the same time, Speaker of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk commented on Trump’s words about a “territorial swaps” with Russia, emphasizing that this would be impossible even through a referendum.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stated that the meeting between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump will take place in Anchorage, Alaska.
