Reuters reported the information.

In an unusual move, two U.S. military officers made a surprise visit to Belarus on Monday to observe large-scale joint exercises with Russia, dubbed Zapad-2025. Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin personally welcomed the American delegation, telling them they were free to “see whatever is of interest.”

The visit, showcased in video released by Belarus’s Defense Ministry, featured the officers shaking hands with Khrenin but declining to address reporters. Their presence was noted alongside representatives from 23 other nations, including NATO members Turkey and Hungary.

The surprise attendance comes at a time of rising friction between NATO and Moscow, following Poland’s downing of Russian drones that crossed its border just days earlier. Yet in parallel, Washington and Minsk appear to be cautiously recalibrating relations.

Last week, Trump envoy John Coale met Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk, securing the release of 52 political prisoners. In exchange, the U.S. eased sanctions on Belarus’s state airline Belavia, granting access to service and buying parts for its Boeing fleet. Trump is now pushing to reopen the American embassy in Belarus and restore economic ties.

The timing underscores the delicate balancing act: as Belarus remains Moscow’s ally and staging ground in the Ukraine war, its quiet opening to Washington hints at shifting dynamics in the region.
