Ukraine enhances anti-tank capabilities with modernized weapon systems
Ukrainian forces are utilizing and modernizing the captured Shturm-S anti-tank systems, enhancing their capabilities with advanced technology and weaponry
The 23rd Separate Mechanized Brigade recently released a video showcasing combat training with the self-propelled anti-tank system Shturm-S, built on the MT-LB chassis. This marks the first public display of its use by Ukrainian forces during Russia’s full-scale invasion, even if only in a training scenario, according to Defense Express.
The origin of this system is notable, as Ukrainian Defense Forces have reportedly captured at least 18 Russian Shturm-S systems. The version shown in the video appears to be the standard model, designed to use Soviet 9M114 Kokon missiles, effective at ranges up to 5 kilometers for striking armored vehicles and fortified targets.
Interestingly, the video hints at upgrades performed by Ukrainian specialists, enhancing the system's efficiency with modern targeting systems and ammunition. This aligns with earlier developments of the modernized Shturm-SM, for which Ukraine's Defense Ministry announced the completion of state trials in January 2024. However, public details about its current configuration remain scarce.
The Shturm-SM project predates the invasion, first presented at the Arms and Security 2021 exhibition. Key upgrades included the replacement of Soviet missiles with RК-2P guided rockets from the Luch Design Bureau and a new electro-optical station from the Izium Instrument-Making Plant, extending the effective range to 6–7 kilometers and enabling all-weather, round-the-clock operation.
