Russia is trying to break into Ukraine’s rear: military expert Zgurets on Avdiivka situation
Defense Express CEO and military expert Serhiy Zgurets notes that over the past two days Russian forces have pushed Ukraine’s defense from southern Avdiivka and are advancing several streets from the industrial area, from the Yasynuvata junction
He shared the information on Espreso TV.
"The situation around Avdiivka and in the city remains extremely difficult. The enemy continues to exert pressure from several directions, starting from the south to Stepove, Avdiivka Coke Plant towards Kamyanka. For two days, the enemy has been pushing our defense from the south and is advancing along several streets from the industrial complex, from the Yasynuvata junction. There are reports from our official analysts that Russian troops are making attempts to enter Avdiivka, which means they are trying to get to the rear of our group holding the line there. On the map, we see red arrows indicating the directions from which the enemy is trying to break into the city. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are putting up as much resistance as possible," commented the expert.
Sergiy Zgurets expressed hope that certain countermeasures will be taken to prevent further advance of Russian forces. However, the large number of Russian personnel currently concentrated around Avdiivka makes this task difficult.
- On January 19, the head of the Avdiivka city military administration, Vitaliy Barabash, said that Russian forces had concentrated all their efforts at cutting off the logistics to Avdiivka.
- On January 20, the commander of the Tavria operational and strategic grouping of troops, Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, said that Russian troops had increased the activity of combat aircraft and the number of assault and offensive operations in the Avdiivka area.
- On January 21, the spokesman for the Tavria direction, Oleksandr Shtupun, noted that Russia had not carried out air strikes in the Avdiivka direction for two days, but the Ukrainian Armed Forces were preparing for an increase in the attack’s intensity.
