Poland to boost 155mm artillery shell production sixfold in two years
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the country plans by 2027 to increase production of 155 mm shells from the current 30,000 to about 180,000 per year
He said this during a visit to the Polish ammunition plant Nitro-Chem in Bydgoszcz, Ukrinform reports.
“This year, two years after the Tusk government came to power in Poland (editor’s note), we will reach a result of about 30,000 units. Meanwhile, over the next two years it is very realistic to achieve a level of about 180,000 per year,” Tusk said.
According to the authorities’ plan, this quantity will fully cover the needs of the Polish army and reduce dependence on imports.
Tusk recalled that in December 2023 Poland produced only 5,000 such shells per year, and he stressed the importance of ramping up production given the high rate of ammunition expenditure at the front in Ukraine.
The Telegraph wrote back in March 2023 that the Polish authorities were working to make their land forces the largest in Europe. At that time, it was noted that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine forced Poland to carry out a genuine revolution in the defense sector.
On May 27, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak signed a document to nearly double the size of the Polish army.
On August 15, Warsaw hosted the largest military parade in 30 years for Polish Army Day, where new and modernized equipment was displayed.
