Russian offensive operations along the border in the Kharkiv region are likely to have a strategic goal of attracting and consolidating Ukrainian forces on this axis to enable Russian advancement into other areas of eastern Ukraine

This conclusion is stated in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

It is noted that Russian troops launched an offensive along the Russian-Ukrainian border in the north of Kharkiv region on the morning of May 10 and achieved significant tactical success.

Analysts emphasize that Russian troops are likely conducting the initial phase of an offensive in the north of Kharkiv region, which has limited operational objectives but is aimed at achieving a strategic effect - diverting troops and equipment from other critical frontline areas in eastern Ukraine.

So far, Russian troops have launched two limited operations in the area: one north of Kharkiv toward Lyptsi and the other northeast of Kharkiv near Vovchansk.

According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, Russian armored assault groups of unspecified size attempted to break through Ukrainian defenses near Vovchansk in the early morning hours, and that fighting in the area continued after Ukrainian forces repelled the Russian attacks.

At the same time, NASA Fire Information for Resource Management (FIRMS) data from May 10 indicates that fierce fighting may have been taking place in and around the settlements of Strilecha, Krasne, Pylna, and Borisivka.

According to ISW, Russian forces are likely to use their tactical foothold in northern Kharkiv region in the coming days to intensify offensive operations and conduct the initial phase of an offensive, which is likely to push Ukrainian forces back from the border with Belgorod region and advance to reach Kharkiv with artillery.

However, the limited efforts currently being made by Russian forces do not indicate that they are conducting a large-scale offensive to surround and capture the city of Kharkiv.

  • On May 10, the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff reported that defensive battles are currently underway in the Kharkiv region. Counterattacks continue in the directions of Lyptsi and Vovchansk. The Russian army is using infantry and equipment.
