U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Iran have agreed to a full and final ceasefire for 12 hours. According to him, it began on the morning of June 24

He wrote about this on TruthSocial.

“It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED! Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World,”  the statement said.

Trump noted that during each ceasefire, the parties would remain peaceful and respectful. He suggested that everything would work as it should and praised Israel and Iran, on “having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called,“ THE 12 DAY WAR."

“This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will,” Trump summed up.

Later, Trump also announced on his social media that the ceasefire between Iran and Israel had come into effect.

Israel's response

After that, Israel officially announced a ceasefire in its war with Iran. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office said Israel had not only met all its goals but had gone beyond them. It claimed that Israel had removed “an immediate double threat” from Iran — both nuclear and missile-related.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also said they had gained full control over Tehran’s airspace and had dealt a heavy blow to Iran’s top military leadership. According to the IDF, they destroyed dozens of key government sites.

“Israel thanks President Trump and the United States for their support in defending against and helping eliminate Iran’s nuclear threat. Since the mission was successful and in full coordination with President Trump, Israel has agreed to his proposal for a bilateral ceasefire,” Netanyahu’s office said.

The statement also warned that Israel would respond strongly if the ceasefire is broken.

CNN, citing an unnamed diplomat, reported that Iran agreed to the U.S.-proposed truce following negotiations mediated by Qatar. On the morning of June 24, Iranian state television announced that a ceasefire in the war with Israel had begun at 7:30 a.m. local time, despite Israel having earlier warned the public about a new missile attack from Iran.

It was reported that Trump asked the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to act as a mediator in reaching a ceasefire agreement with Iran. This request came after Tehran carried out retaliatory strikes on a U.S. base in Qatar.

At the same time, according to a senior White House official, Israel agreed to the ceasefire deal on the condition that Iran would halt its attacks. It was noted that the U.S. President communicated directly with the Israeli Prime Minister, while Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio, and Special Representative Steve Witkoff discussed the terms with the Iranian side through both direct and indirect channels.

"This is the end of the war. It is a great thing for Israel and the world," Trump told Axios on Monday evening.

The publication clarified information regarding Trump’s post about the ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Specifically, it stated that the truce would take effect at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

It was reported that Iran would begin the 12-hour ceasefire first, followed by Israel. After 24 hours, an official end to the war would be announced.

However, the Israel Defense Forces later reported that Iran had resumed missile attacks on Israel, just over an hour after the ceasefire was declared.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Iran had broken the ceasefire and ordered strikes on Tehran.

He reportedly has instructed the Israel Defense Forces to "respond forcefully to Iran's violation of the ceasefire with intense strikes against regime targets in the Heart of Tehran.

Background

On the night of June 13, Israel launched a large-scale operation against Iran, launching preemptive strikes on its nuclear and military facilities. Fox News reported that Israel managed to mislead Iran's air force leadership by convening a meeting before the June 13 strikes on the country's military and nuclear facilities. After the attack, U.S. President Donald Trump called on Tehran to strike a deal “before it's too late,” calling the Israeli strikes very successful.

Later, Donald Trump told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the United States would consider a strike on the underground nuclear facility in Fordow, Iran, if it became necessary to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons. At the same time, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran does not seek to expand the conflict with Israel to neighboring countries, but is ready to take self-defense measures if necessary.

On June 18, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threatened that a possible U.S. military intervention in the conflict with Israel would have serious irreparable consequences. On the same day, while talking to journalists, Donald Trump evaded a direct answer to a question about a possible U.S. strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

On June 19, it was reported that senior U.S. officials were preparing for a possible strike on Iran in the coming days, according to Bloomberg.

U.S. strikes on Iran

On June 20, Donald Trump gave Iran’s ruling elite "two weeks" to abandon its nuclear program. Until then, the U.S. reportedly would not enter into war against the Islamic Republic of Iran on Israel’s side.

On the night of June 22, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced airstrikes on three nuclear facilities in Iran. According to him, the American military hit sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei stated that the country had witnessed a "betrayal of diplomacy" by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. He assured that Tehran would exercise its right to self-defense.

Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated that the U.S. is at war with Iran’s nuclear program, which has now been "significantly pushed back."

Later, Donald Trump commented on the potential for regime change in Iran, saying that if the regime cannot "make the country great," then change is necessary.
