Germany appoints Ambassador to Ukraine Jäger as chief of intelligence service
The German government has decided to appoint the German Ambassador to Ukraine, Martin Jäger, as the President of the Federal Intelligence Service of Germany (BND)
Tagesschau reported the information.
The exact date when Jäger will take office has not yet been announced.
The 60-year-old diplomat has extensive experience in both international politics and public administration. He will replace Bruno Kahl, who has headed the BND since 2016 and will now become Germany’s ambassador to the Vatican.
Born in Ulm, Jäger studied ethnology and political science in Munich, worked at the Foreign Ministry, the Chancellor’s Office, and held several positions in the diplomatic service, including in Prague.
In the 2000s, he was the spokesperson and advisor to Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who was then the Foreign Minister. In 2006, Jäger coordinated crisis communications during the kidnapping of German citizens in Iraq. In 2008, he temporarily left public service and headed external relations at Daimler AG, where he became the car manufacturer’s “informal foreign minister.” Jäger began his work as ambassador to Ukraine in 2023.
German media reported last week that Jäger might be appointed as the head of intelligence.
