Merz talks Ukraine with Trump during phone conversation

On the evening of May 8, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke on the phone with U.S. President Donald Trump. They agreed to work closely together to end the war in Ukraine

This is stated in a message on the official website of the chancellor.

"The Federal Chancellor supported the president’s call for a swift end to the killing in Ukraine. Russia must agree to a ceasefire to create space for negotiations. Trump stated he would firmly support Germany’s efforts, along with France, the UK, Poland, and other European partners, aimed at achieving lasting peace," the statement says.

In addition, Trump and Merz agreed to quickly resolve trade disputes and announced mutual visits to the U.S. and Germany.

Trump congratulated Merz on his inauguration, while Merz assured the American leader that, 80 years after the end of World War II, the U.S. remains an indispensable friend and partner of Germany.
