DW reported the information.

Merz made these remarks after meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome.

“We agreed that Italy should play a certain role here (in the peace process – ed.),” he said.

Merz announced that in the coming days, he will hold talks with other European partners.

“We must not allow ourselves to be divided within the European Union. There are no first- or second-class members here,” the Chancellor emphasized.

Merz called Italy an “indispensable strategic partner.”

  • On May 11, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz responded to Russian leader Vladimir Putin's proposal to resume peace talks with Ukraine, emphasizing that this can only happen after a ceasefire between the parties.
  • On May 17, it was reported that Italy plans to send 400 M113 armored vehicles and satellite surveillance to Ukraine to boost intelligence and frontline capabilities.
