When I read the latest "turn of speech" of the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, I am reminded of the phrase of the famous Abkhazian writer (who, after all, was "almost" a dissident in the USSR) Fazil Iskander that "a Soviet psycho is the most normal in the world." Well, because we think that only right now, with the beginning of the global war of democracy and tyrannies, we have discovered parallel worlds of worldviews, principles, values, and criteria of "normality." But they have always existed...
So, back to my favorite character. Medvedev said that Russia would achieve the goals of its "special military operation" in any case, and "if it is necessary to reach Kyiv, then it is necessary to go to Kyiv, if it is necessary to reach Lviv, then it is necessary to go to Lviv in order to exterminate this infection."

Medvedev, after all, can go wherever he wants - the sky is the limit for a drunk. But if he is trying to win back the favor of his bunker old man in this way (and rumors are circulating in the Kremlin), it only shows the quality of his gray matter. If this is a certain strategy being discussed in a state institution, the Russian Security Council, then the matter is serious and requires immediate intervention by experts. In the end, what Medvedev says ("I will say only one thing, something that is already obvious: the Russian Federation is not at war with Ukraine... our country is at war with the 3.6-million-strong NATO army"), has already been responded to by the equally odious Prigozhin. At least he is more familiar with the situation and strongly insists that the Russian army cannot cope with Ukrainians, and the Alliance has nothing to do with it.
We can write off the "bear" nonsense as, to put it mildly, the author's lack of professionalism. Well, a private law expert does not make a good military man. Or you can dig into the history of the issue and discover that Medvedev really draws inspiration from his "patron."

In the memoirs of people close to Putin at the beginning of his presidential marathon, one can find an extremely negative, almost idiosyncratic attitude of the Muscovite "khan" towards Lviv. It is said that he was quite seriously hinting that the way to "subdue Ukraine" is very simple: a nuclear strike on Lviv should be launched in order, in Putin's words, to destroy "this viperous nest of Banderites." This sounded like a diagnosis even then, but now Medvedev appears as a perfect illustration of Burroughs' mockingbird conclusion: "A paranoid is someone who knows a little of what's going on. A psychotic is a guy who's just found out what's going on."

I think that before the full-scale invasion, the Kremlin hermit was convinced that Western Ukraine was the cause of the "Ukrainian issue" and that the rest of Ukraine was "Malorossiya" and would certainly bow in deep respect and welcome the next "liberators" with bread and salt. But the reality turned out to be cruel to Moscow strategists, who, by the way, based their plans on maps of World War II...
By the way, Muscovites should remember the lessons of that war very well, especially those of Western Ukraine. And if they "plan" to reach Lviv, then let them prepare for a long-lasting hell that the Ukrainian Insurgent Army once arranged for their predecessors. At least in my native village, the insurgents held out until the early 60s, and a year before I was born, a handful of the last heroes blew themselves up in a neighboring house’s hideout surrounded by the NKVD...
But in Moscow, they teach a kind of history cobbled together by Sudoplatov and other "knights of the cloak and dagger." Anyone who has a more or less critical mind and their own vision of events, normal people there, coming back to Fazil Iskander, are labeled "foreign agents," which is equivalent to a psychiatrist's diagnosis. Continuity, so to speak - the KGB also tortured dissidents with punitive psychiatry...

Therefore, Medvedev is right in his own way when he says that "in the broad sense of the word (it is necessary) to create a sanitary zone" between Russia and the West. Well, first of all, the very concept of a "sanitary zone" in international politics is archaic and was completely useless even at the time when it was invented in the "Soviet academies." And in today's borderless information society even more so. Secondly, yes, of course, after Ukraine's victory, a "sanitary zone" bordering the remnants of the "empire" is a must. For the sake of, so to speak, re-educating those who have listened to Medvedev, Skabeyeva, and Solovyov.
