"Lost any sort of faith": Ukrainian MP withdraws Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize nomination
Ukrainian MP and head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy, Oleksandr Merezhko, nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, but later pulled the nomination
Newsweek and The Telegraph reported this.
The MP submitted the withdrawal request on the morning of Monday, June 23. He said he has "lost any sort of faith and belief" in Trump and his ability to bring peace between Russia and Ukraine.
Merezhko criticized the U.S. president for allegedly avoiding the need to impose sanctions on Russia.
He also said Trump barely responded to recent large-scale attacks on Kyiv, adding that “he has chosen the path of appeasement.”
Speaking about Trump’s role in the Middle East, Merezhko said he understands his stance on Israel, because Iran has said it wants to destroy Israel, and added that Russia also wants to destroy Ukraine.
“I wish he would do the same for Ukraine. Russia also wants to destroy Ukraine. Russia and Iran help each other. Trump should be consistent and help Ukraine,” Merezhko said.
The Ukrainian MP had nominated Trump in November, a few weeks after he won the presidential election.
According to Merezhko, Trump could supposedly help Ukraine reach a just, comprehensive and sustainable peace based on the UN Charter and international law.
- Trump was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the second time in a week after brokering a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, announced on June 24.
