Lithuania extends state of emergency on Russia and Belarus borders
On December 13, Lithuania’s Seimas has decided to extend the state of emergency on the border with Russia and Belarus for 3 more months, until March 10. Seventy MPs voted for, 21 against, 29 abstained
This was reported on the parliament’s website.
The Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė and the Minister of Internal Affairs Agne Bilotaite stressed its importance putting forward the proposal to extend the state of emergency.
"It is proposed to extend the state of emergency because nothing has changed, nothing has improved, it has only gotten worse - additional Russian forces have appeared on the territory of Belarus," Šimonytė said.
In turn, Bilotaite noted that "now we see certain threats from the Kaliningrad side as well, because new flights are appearing, so we really have to be prepared."
During the state of emergency, some of the measures that are already being taken will be continued, including the protection of the state border in an enhanced mode and border checks. As before, a strict visa regime will be in force; the issuance of visas to citizens of Russia and Belarus in Lathuania’s visa services abroad is suspended, except for cases when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs acts as an intermediary.
