License of 21 vessels of largest shadow oil carrier from Russia revoked
Starting June 3, the global shipping regulator Lloyd's Register will revoke the licenses of 21 tankers of the Indian corporation Gatik Ship Management, which is considered the largest shadow oil carrier from Russia
Reuters reported the information.
Lloyd's Register stated that it seeks to promote compliance with sanctions on the trade in Russian oil. If a violation of sanctions is confirmed by evidence, Lloyd's Register will prohibit any services to vessels associated with the violations, the company said.
Without a license from the regulator, tankers will not be able to take out insurance and enter ports. However, Lloyd's Register also reported that 11 of the company's vessels are certified by the Indian regulator Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) and will probably be able to continue shipping with this license.
One of the largest US insurers, American Club, also told Reuters that it no longer provides insurance coverage for Gatik Ship Management vessels, and Russian insurer Ingosstrakh said it has no plans to work with Gatik in the future. They did not specify the reasons for their decisions.
This year, Gatik has become the leading carrier of Russian oil to India, using a fleet of more than 40 tankers.
Earlier this month, EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell said the EU should take action against India over its resale of Russian oil to Europe.
In an article published in the Financial Times on May 16, Borrell said that "we have to act" to stop the flow of oil from Russia to India, which has become one of the largest buyers of Russian oil since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
India, which imports 80% of its oil, bought only about 2% to 3% of that volume from Russia before the full-scale war. But when oil prices rose sharply last year, the Indian government steadily increased its oil purchases from Russia, receiving large discounts.
