Latvia returns compulsory military service for men
Latvia has passed a law on the return of compulsory military service, with the first draft taking place this summer
Delfi reports that the law was passed with 68 votes in favor, 11 deputies voted against, and five abstained. Men between the ages of 18 and 27 are subject to conscription for national defense service for a period of 11 months. There is a possibility of civilian or alternative service.
The strengthening of Latvia's national defense is among the reasons for this decision.
It is noted that if a Latvian citizen is studying at the time of conscription, he can serve within a year after graduation.
In addition, a person can get a deferral for childcare or family reasons. A citizen who also has the citizenship of another state is not subject to conscription if he has already performed military service abroad. Such a person may apply for service voluntarily.
This summer, they plan to recruit 300 people, all of whom will be volunteers. Service will become mandatory in January 2024. Evasion of military service is a criminal offense.
