Kuleba calls on UN members to join G7 declaration on Ukraine security guarantees

Kyiv wants all UN countries to consider joining the Group of Seven (G7) declaration on security guarantees for Ukraine

This was stated by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba at the UN General Assembly debate, RBC-Ukraine reports.

"While Ukraine is fighting for its survival, exercising self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter, we are constantly hearing absurd calls for an abstract peace. Most of them do not really mean peace, but something else," the Foreign Minister said.

As Kuleba explained, while Ukraine is fighting Russian aggression, some countries offer to "sit down at the negotiating table", "not to prolong the war" or even not to provide military assistance to Ukraine. Such calls, according to the minister, only play into Russia's hands.

"After resisting Russia's full-scale aggression for more than a year and a half, my 40 million people can only answer to all these proposals: 'No'. No to genocide under the guise of peace. No to false pacifism that justifies the aggressor for its crimes. No to territorial concessions for the sake of the illusion of peace. No! We will fight and we will win. Because we want to live," he stressed.

The Minister reminded that last week, on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Vilnius, the leaders of the G7 countries agreed on a joint declaration in which they promised to support Ukraine until it joins the Alliance.

"Since then, ten more countries have joined them. I urge every UN member state to consider joining the G7 declaration, which is open for signature. Make a personal, practical contribution to Ukraine's security," Kuleba said, adding that by doing so, these countries would also guarantee their own security.

In addition, the Foreign Minister called on UN countries to choose a side in the war rather than take a "neutral position".

"I urge everyone else to stop pretending to be neutral. There is no place for neutrality in a situation of genocidal war and mass atrocities," he concluded.

Declaration on security guarantees for Ukraine

On July 17, the G7 countries agreed on a joint declaration that outlines the parameters of security guarantees for Ukraine. The agreement will be open to all interested parties. US President Joe Biden said that the declaration outlines support for Ukraine in the short and long term.

The Ukrainian Presidential Administration noted that this is an important victory for Ukraine on its path to NATO and a great result, which was preceded by many months of work by the team at the level of national security advisers from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, as well as in communication with other partners.

The same day, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden joined the declaration. Subsequently, Spain, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Belgium and Portugal also supported it.
