It's quite realistic that Ukraine will receive enough Western tanks - political strategist Jason Jay Smart
American international political consultant Jason Jay Smart told Espreso whether Ukraine will receive enough tanks to defend itself and why partners are reluctant to supply some weapons to the Ukrainian army
In one of his interviews, Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi said that Ukraine needs at least 300 tanks to successfully defend itself. The American political adviser believes that it is quite possible to get close to this number.
“I do think that there are going to be enough tanks for Ukraine to sufficiently defend itself. It's more than just the Leopard tanks. Other countries, in particular Poland, announced that it is going to give more older Soviet model tanks that have been refurbished. I think that the numbers will add up. I don't know if we will reach 300 tanks in the next couple months, but getting closer to those numbers is quite realistic,” he said.
At the same time, one of the reasons why Western partners, including the United States, are reluctant to supply combat tanks to Ukraine is that they are being refurbished.
“Tanks are very massive and they break down a lot. So when they break down, if you don't have the right parts, you are stuck with a big piece of metal. So, tanks take a lot of refurbishing,” the political strategist emphasized.
Jason Jay Smart concluded that there is a similar problem with the supply of aircraft. “If one of the parts of the airplane breaks, you can't just substitute something else. You have to have that exact modeled piece.”
