"It has no strategic importance": Commander of Ukrainian Ground Forces explains what Bakhmut is for Russians
The Russian army wants to capture Bakhmut in the Donetsk region not because of its strategic importance, but because there is certain symbolism
Commander of Ukrainian Ground Forces, Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi, said this live on air of the United News TV marathon on December 5, Radio Svoboda reports.
"Militarily, Bakhmut has no strategic significance. But it has psychological importance. Because after a series of losses that Russian troops suffered in Kherson, Kherson region, and in Kharkiv region, it will be symbolic for them. That is why Russian forces try in any way to take control of this city, break through defenses and thus motivate its personnel, raise the level of their moral and psychological state," he explained.

According to the colonel-general, Russian occupying forces have not stopped trying to capture the town for several months, but they have not achieved significant success in this.
"There were already six or seven terms when they were supposed to take over this town, but each time our soldiers foiled their plans with their heroic work. And during all this time they (Russian troops - ed.) advanced on 5 kilometers maximum," commander noted.
