Ukrainian Ambassador says Israel refuses to jointly counter Iranian drones
Ukraine's Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Korniychuk said that Jerusalem did not accept the offer to cooperate with Kyiv to counter Iranian drones
He said this in an interview with Ynet, as quoted by the Times of Israel.
According to the ambassador, in February 2023, he brought the remains of an Iranian drone that Russia had fired at Kyiv to the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He then warned that without Ukraine's cooperation, Israel would soon be attacked with similar drones.
“I don’t want to say now, ‘I told you so,'” Korniychuk said, referring to the Lebanese group Hezbollah's attack on an Israeli military base using Iranian drones.
Although cooperation between Kyiv and Jerusalem has become more active since the start of the Hamas attack on Israel, the Ukrainian ambassador believes that more could have been done, including intelligence sharing.
“It has long been clear to me that we are fighting the same enemy. I can say that after the attack on Israel that happened on October 7, Israel woke up, but there is much more to do,” Korniychuk said, emphasizing the close ties between Russia and Iran.
What is known about cooperation between Ukraine and Israel
In 2022, Israel promised to specially develop and supply Ukraine with civilian warning systems. In January, Israel agreed to officially transfer smart warning technologies to Ukraine.
At the end of April, it was reported that Israel had installed an attack warning system in Kyiv. The system was subsequently tested in the capital in May.
Ukraine's Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Korniychuk spoke about the advantages of the Israeli warning system. According to him, this warning system is not an air defense system, but it will help the military know where an enemy object is flying and will turn on the siren only there, not all over Ukraine.
At the same time, Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky, commenting on the provision of an early warning system to Kyiv, said that his country had fulfilled everything it had promised, and it was up to Ukraine to do the rest.
