On Wednesday, May 22, the prime ministers of Norway, Ireland and Spain announced the official recognition of the Palestinian state. The decision will come into force on May 28. In response, Israel announced that it was withdrawing its ambassadors from the countries

This was reported by NRK, Irish Times and El Pais.

In particular, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre justifies the decision by the fact that a Palestinian state is absolutely necessary for peace in the Middle East.

"When we recognize Palestine, we can more strongly encourage other countries to support the development of the Palestinian state, and we can hold it accountable," Støre said.

According to Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris, the recognition of Palestinian statehood has "powerful political and symbolic value, recognising the Palestinian people’s aspirations to be living freely."

In his opinion, his country has done "the right thing."

"Recognition of the state of Palestine represents unequivocal support of the two-state solution," Harris emphasized, adding that this is the only credible path to peace between Israel and Palestine.

Also, the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, announcing the recognition of Palestine in Congress, emphasized that this decision is not against Israel or the Jewish people.

"I want to make one thing clear: this recognition is not against anyone, it is not against the people of Israel, a people we value. Much less is it against the Jews, a people worthy of admiration, whose history is linked to Spain. It is also not in favor of Hamas, as some deputies say, in an attempt to take advantage of this case," Sanchez assured.

Israel's reaction

Later, it became known that Israel was recalling its ambassadors to Ireland and Norway because of the steps to recognize the Palestinian state.

According to Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, his country "will not remain silent" and promised "further severe consequences."

"I’m sending a clear and unequivocal message to Ireland and Norway: Israel will not remain silent in the face of those undermining its sovereignty and endangering its security. Today's decision sends a message to the Palestinians and the world: Terrorism pays. After the Hamas terror organization carried out the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, after committing heinous sexual crimes witnessed by the world, these countries chose to reward Hamas and Iran by recognizing a Palestinian state," he wrote on social network X.

The Israeli foreign minister added that if Spain also recognized Palestine, a similar step would be taken against the country.

The Israeli Foreign Minister added that if Spain also recognizes Palestine, a similar step will be taken against the country.

"The Irish-Norwegian folly does not deter us; we are determined to achieve our goals: restoring security to our citizens, dismantling Hamas, and bringing the hostages home. There are no more just causes than these," Katz emphasized.

  • Earlier it was reported that the Irish government plans to officially announce the recognition of the Palestinian state together with the other two countries.
