Is this last ‘Ramstein’ summit before Ukraine’s counteroffensive?
Now is the crucial time in Ukraine's fight for freedom, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin says at the 10th Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting
The Ukrainian military’s needs are high on the agenda Wednesday as US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is hosting the virtual meeting of defense officials from nearly 50 countries.
The tenth meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group is also called ‘Ramstein’ summit – after several previous rounds of talks were held at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
Ukraine is now at a crucial time in the fight for its freedom, Austin said as he opened the meeting to discuss what Ukraine needs to fight off a Russian invasion.
“We are now at a crucial time in the course of Ukraine's fight for freedom. And we must all demonstrate our continued resolve and unity. That means following through on our commitments — fully and quickly. We must provide Ukraine with the full capabilities for the fight ahead,” he said.
Austin added that the coalition of countries that are donating Leopard tanks to Ukraine continues to grow. And nine countries have now committed to providing more than 150 Leopard tanks.
“I'm confident that we will deliver on our commitments. After 10 meetings of the Contact Group, our unity of effort continues to be a mighty source of strength. And we will remain resolute and united in support of Ukraine's right to live as a free and sovereign country – for as long as it takes,” the US defense secretary assured.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg joined the meeting and updated the group on NATO and Allies’ efforts to swiftly provide Ukraine with key capabilities, including more air defence systems, more armour, and more ammunition.
Stoltenberg stressed that ongoing work to ramp up NATO’s defence industrial base is crucial for ensuring defence, as well as providing support to Ukraine for as long as necessary.
