Indian PM Modi describes war in Ukraine as 'tensions' at G20 summit
At the G20 summit in New Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the war in Ukraine as 'tensions' and called for overcoming differences
This is reported by The Guardian.
“The experience of the last few years – financial crisis, climate change, pandemic, terrorism and wars – clearly shows that global governance has failed,” Modi said in a recorded statement opening the meeting of G20 foreign ministers.
He made no direct reference to the war in Ukraine but acknowledged that discussions were affected by ‘geopolitical tensions’.
“We are meeting at a time of deep global divisions … We all have our positions and our perspectives on how these tensions [can] be resolved. However, as the leading economies of the world, we also have a responsibility for those who are not in this room,” he added.
India wanted the G20 summit to focus on issues such as poverty alleviation and global climate change, but the war in Ukraine pushed other agenda items off the table.

Earlier, the EU delegation said that it would not support a statement at the G20 summit in India if it did not condemn Russia's war against Ukraine.
