Germany will compensate Czech Republic, other Eastern European countries for armored vehicles they provided to Ukraine - Scholz
The Czech Republic will receive 15 Leopard 2A4 tanks from Germany in place of the several dozen Soviet-designed tanks that the Czechs gave to Ukraine.
This was announced on Monday at a joint press conference in Prague by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, BBC reports.
Germany is also reimbursing military equipment given to Ukraine to other Eastern European NATO countries, in particular to Poland.
The publication notes that this was known earlier, but on Monday Fiala and Scholz announced it officially as a finally resolved case.
In addition to the free Leopard model 2A4, the Czech Republic, according to local press, intends to buy 50 tanks of the newer model, the 2A7+.
Speaking in Prague, Olaf Scholz assured that Germany would continue and directly help Ukraine with weapons.
"In the coming weeks and days, we will send new, modern weapons to Ukraine, such as anti-aircraft and anti-radar systems and reconnaissance drones [...] Our goal is for the armed forces of Ukraine to be modern and always able to defend their country," Scholz was quoted as saying by Reuters.
