Germany offers Poland Patriot system to protect against potential missile attacks
Germany offered Poland an additional Patriot anti-missile defense system to protect its airspace from potential missile attacks, following a stray missile crash
This was reported by Reuters citing the statement of the Minister of Defense of Germany, Christine Lambrecht.
"We have offered Poland support in securing airspace - with our Eurofighters and with Patriot air defence systems," Lambrecht said.
Earlier, the German government said it would offer Poland further assistance in air patrols with the help of German Eurofighters following the missile incident. The publication notes that it had raised fears that the war in Ukraine could spill over its borders.
Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, NATO has strengthened its air defense in Eastern Europe. More than a dozen NATO allies, led by Germany, launched an initiative in October to jointly procure air and missile defense systems for multiple threat levels, including the Patriot system.
"Ground-based air defence systems such as Raytheon’s (RTX.N) Patriot are built to intercept incoming missiles. Germany had 36 Patriot units when it was NATO's frontline during the Cold War. German forces currently have 12 Patriot units, two of which are deployed to Slovakia," Reuters adds.
