Germany considers nationalizing Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline section - Der Spiegel
Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action is researching the possibility of nationalizing the German section of the Nord Stream-2 underwater gas pipeline
This was reported by Der Spiegel.
It is noted that the project to nationalise part of Nord Stream 2 emerged after Germany described Russia's actions in the European liquefied natural gas market as a full-fledged "gas war" and began to develop measures to mitigate the economic consequences in case of a complete disconnection of the Russian gas supply.
It is planned to cut off the "German" section of Nord Stream-2 from the rest of the pipeline, and then to adapt the already built PP-2 subsystems on land to the mobile liquefied natural gas unloading terminals.
The ready-made liquefied natural gas production infrastructure - a distribution network with compressors and pipelines - can also be used directly to transport gas to southern Germany.
Despite the plans, the overall vision of this procedure has not yet been formed and many related aspects remain unresolved.
In particular, the project of underwater dismantling of the pipeline will require a new long-term environmental expertise. In addition, the management company of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has been declared bankruptcy, and the crisis management of its assets is carried out by a Swiss independent company, which creates legal problems in the event of an attempt to nationalise part of the company's assets.
