PACE recognizes Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of Ukrainian people
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported the information.
“This important decision honors the memory of millions of innocent Ukrainians who perished as a result of the artificial famine – a genocide orchestrated by the Soviet regime,” the statement said.
According to Yevhenia Kravchuk, Deputy Chair of the Humanitarian and Information Policy Committee, member of the Ukrainian delegation to PACE, 80 votes supported the decision.
“The document establishes that the former leadership of the USSR deliberately implemented policies that led to the famine in Ukraine in an effort to completely suppress any Ukrainian resistance to the totalitarian communist regime, subjugate the Ukrainian people and destroy their aspirations and efforts to establish an independent Ukrainian state,” Kravchuk wrote.
She added that the Assembly also determines that the systematic destruction of first political and cultural leaders, and then millions of ordinary Ukrainians, was deliberately intended as genocide.
Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that with this decision, PACE emphasizes the importance of historical truth and justice and thanked the members of the Assembly for their solidarity and support.
The Ministry also called on all nations and international organizations to recognize the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide against the Ukrainian people, to condemn Russia's ongoing aggressive and genocidal actions and to support Ukraine in its struggle for freedom, human rights and the rule of law.
