Fukushima scenario is possible at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

Olena Pareniuk, a senior researcher at the Institute of Nuclear Power Plant Safety Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, shared the details with Espreso TV. 

"NPPs are very protected and safe. After Chernobyl, safety techniques have increased, after Fukushima even more. We have many reactors around the world and incidents happen every year. They can be mainly designed and planned in a certain way. And after each incident, the IAEA reviews the entire  security strategy, if it has something to teach us - new recommendations are published, which are mandatory for the adoption of nuclear power plants", she said.

According to the specialist, blowing up the reactor to start a nuclear reaction is "not impossible, but very difficult. You need time and knowledge".

"There are other dangers that cannot be ignored. Now a lot of specialists are talking about the possibility of a Fukushima scenario, when the power grid is completely cut off. This means that there will be no electricity to power the pumps that will pump the water to cool the reactor. The active zone can melt and the emission of radionuclides can begin and then the Fukushima scenario will happen. The reactor will not explode, most likely, but neither the station nor the occupants will be healthy", Pareniuk concluded.
