Bloomberg reported the information.
French President Emmanuel Macron indicated that Trump may be open to new sanctions if there is broad international support.
“Yesterday, I heard, as did my colleagues, the fact that he said that’s fine if everyone supports the sanctions,” Emmanuel Macron said. “He didn’t want to go at it alone, but considers that we can go forward.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz echoed a similar sentiment, expressing hope that the U.S. would soon follow suit on additional sanctions against Russia.
“I return to Germany with cautious optimism that decisions will also be made in America in the coming days to impose further sanctions against Russia,” Merz said in his concluding statement in Kananaskis, Alberta.
- On June 17, President Trump said European countries should lead on new Russia sanctions, calling them financially costly for the U.S.
