Former Lithuanian Prime Minister Kubilius predicts Ukraine's accession to EU in 2029

MEP and former Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius has said that Ukraine could join the European Union in 2029

He said this in an interview with Ukrainian media.

“In the European Parliament's resolutions, we have written down that negotiations with Ukraine on its accession to the European Union should begin in 2023. And we want them to go the same way as with Central Europe. It took Lithuania three years to negotiate with the EU, and Poland four years – it is a large country, commensurate with Ukraine. Given this experience, we in the European Parliament think that negotiations with Ukraine can be completed by 2027, when Lithuania will hold the EU presidency. It will take another year or two to ratify the agreement in all 27 EU members. If we work at a good pace, we can hope that in 2029 Ukraine will be able to participate in the European Parliament elections as a full-fledged EU member,” Kubilius said.

He emphasized that this is the opinion of MEPs.

The politician noted that Ukraine's membership in the EU should be preceded by reforms.
