Former Ambassador Lytvyn explains what to expect from China's visit to Ukraine

Ihor Lytvyn, former Ambassador of Ukraine to China and co-chairman of the Ukrainian-Chinese Business Council, said this. 

Lytvyn noted that Li Hui is an experienced diplomat and considers him a worthy representative for this diplomatic mission. The former ambassador said that China would not have sent a person to the talks who was not ready to listen to the Ukrainian side.

“What is contained in China's peace plan does not suit us in many ways. This does not mean that we should not negotiate with a representative of the PRC - this is not how diplomacy is done. We will say what we need. It never happens that one side says 'no' and everything ends. I personally knew Mr. Li Hui when he was the director of the Europe and Central Asia Department. We had many meetings and negotiations, and I can say that he is a smart man, an experienced diplomat. China will not send a person to such important negotiations who knows only his own position and does not listen to others. He is not like that at all, and I believe that after setting out our vision of how the invasion should end, the withdrawal of Russian troops, the return of children and citizens who were forcibly taken to Russia, reparations, and much more, he should listen to it and convey it to the Chinese president. And only with these indicators, what is desired and what should be, he should go to other countries and agree on how everyone else will act,” Lytvyn said.

• China's Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui will visit Ukraine, Russia, Poland, France, and Germany on May 15. The purpose of the visits is to find ways to end the war.
