Kyiv apartment building shelled, 5 people rescued, 10 injured
Two powerful explosions ripped through Kyiv’s Shevchenkivsky district
Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko shared information on the assault on the capital.
According to initial reports, on the evening of April 28 Russian forces fired on downtown Kyiv. Two hits are reported in Shevchenkivsky district.
Rescue services are on the scene. Information about the numbers of affected is being established.
Representative of the State Emergency Service, Svitlana Vodolaga, told Hromadske TV channel that people have been injured during this latest bout of shelling, but numbers are not yet known.
"Two hits. One target, one residential sector near the target. The hit was on the first floors, and there are people on the upper ones" the speaker said.
Vitaliy Klitschko commented on the situation from the scene:
"Friends! Clarifying information on Shevchenkivsky district. The lower floors of a residential building were hit. Rescuers and doctors are working on the spot. They are also examining houses nearby, taking people out. Three injured people have now been hospitalized".
Mykhailo Podolyak added on Twitter that shelling the Ukrainian capital during a visit from the UN Secretary-General, who met with Putin so recently, is a particularly cynical move.
"Missile strikes on the center of the capital during the official visit of the UN Secretary-General. The day before yesterday, António Guterres was sitting at a long table in the Kremlin, and today explosions were heard a kilometer away. A postcard from Moscow? Remind me why Russia still has a seat in the UN Security Council".
Around 23:00, rescue services shared more information about the impact of the strike:
"April 28 at 20:13, the State Emergency Service in Kyiv received reports of a fire in the capital’s Shevchenkivsky district. As a result of Russian shelling, a fire broke out in a 25-storey residential building resulting in the partial destruction of the 1st and 2nd floors.
“At 21:25 the fire, which covered a total area of 100 sq. m., was extinguished. Search and rescue operations are carried out on the spot.
According to initial data, 5 people were rescued, 10 people were injured. Further details are being ascertained. 12 fire brigade vehicles and 98 State Emergency Service personnel were involved in responding to the incident".
